Running Mturoute
Because of the different way it performs tests, you will need to do the following things differently for Mturoute to work properly:
1. Assume no fragmentation is happening. You should adjust your MTU to be equal to or larger than the largest size for which a host will respond to a ping.
2. Do not use -r 0, since the test ends after the first response is received, and a subsequent response is always placed at the end of the file.
3. You must use the -f flag on Mturoute, since it can cause packets to be fragmented, which will result in incorrect MTU values.
4. You must use the -i flag on Mturoute, since you want it to run in a continuous fashion.
The -w flag tells mturoute to wait a given amount of time for a given probe to complete, for example -w 2s means that you expect it to take at least 2 seconds to complete.
The -d flag is new in version 2, it allows you to specify the number of retries that mturoute will run given a probe timeout. The default number of retries is 3.
The -m flag is new in version 2, it allows you to set a maximum probe size, in bits. The default is 10000.

A small C program that displays the MTU values on the path between the local host and a specified host.
When the program is run with no command line parameters, it will ask for a command line parameter specifying the host to which the program will pings. The program will then display the MTU for each of the hosts, on the path between the local host and the target host.
If the local host is specified as “localhost”, the program will only ping a single host.
If the program is run with the -m flag and the -m flag is not specified, then the program will attempt to determine the MTU for the entire path between the local host and the specified host.
If the local host is specified as “localhost”, then the program will only try to determine the MTU for the local host, the path between the local host and the specified host is not included.
If the program is run with the -t flag, the program will display the MTU for each hop between the local host and the target host.
In the -t mode, if the local host is specified as “localhost”, then the program will display the MTU for the local host only.
The output from this program should be placed in a file (mturoute.log) for later analysis.

mturoute was originally written by someone who wanted a more general purpose utility than the usual ping. The original version was meant to be a very compact program which made efficient use of the ICMP protocol. It started as a command line script for “ping-like” tools, and then morphed into a general purpose “traceroute” like tool.
mturoute generates maybe 100 times as much traffic as a normal ping does, so you should exercise restraint when running it on networks you do not administer. During development and testing my ICMP capability was disabled completely several times, although a power cycle on the cable modem restored normal operation.
The MTU reports that mturoute calculates can be queried with the -s command line option.
mturoute prints a summary of the results in the form:

mturoute can be configured using the optional set of command line options described below.

-f. If the -f flag is set, mturoute won’t test MTU sizes. This flag will toggle off the “do not fragment” bit, which will allow intermediate routers to break mturoute’s probes into multiple packets if they exceed the MTU size. Fragmented probes are re-assembled at their destination. With MTU is taken out of the equation, this mode instead reports the largest ping that a given host will respond to. This could help you determine whether fragmentation is happening properly.
